    About Copper

    color transformations in copper

Copper is the chameleon of metals.

Through a natural process called "oxidation," copper can change from a red-orange metal, to brown, black or even a beautiful blue/green. Examples of this oxidation can be seen in architecture and art throughout the world, but most famously in the Statue of Liberty. Underneath her patina is 179,000 pounds of copper and the blue-green hue is what has protected her from corrosion since 1886, despite being surrounded by water and the elements.

Oxidation occurs when copper is exposed to air, water, salt, heat or acidic compounds. Unlike iron which rusts, copper's oxidation forms a protective outer layer that prevents decay. And all the while, it is changing from one enchanting color to the next.

    Caring for your copper:
We at LUNASICK appreciate the ever-changing nature of copper, and refrain from stopping these amazing changes in unnatural ways. However, if you prefer to maintain the original rose-orange copper color, here are some simple polishing tips:

    • Polish your copper with a copper polish available at most home improvement stores.
    • Gently sand the top layer of metal with fine grit sandpaper to remove the oxidation.
    • DIY a polish using 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup flour and enough vinegar to make a thick paste. Use a soft cloth to rub the paste on the surface of the copper. Buff the copper to your desired result and rinse with warm water. Dry immediately.
    • Once you achieve your desired color, you can also add a top coat of lacquer, epoxy or even clear fingernail polish to help seal it from the elements.

    fun facts about copper

Wearing copper has long been said to have anti-aging capabilities, relieve arthritis pain and can help the body absorb some of the minerals necessary for a range of bodily functions into the bloodstream.

Copper is a natural antibacterial agent. Door handles are commonly made of brass (a copper/zinc alloy)  to avoid the spread of diseases.

It is estimated that 80 percent of the copper that has been mined to date is still in use. This is due to the fact that copper is 100% recyclable.

A copper patina develops quicker in air that contains a lot of sulfur, caused by pollution.

Ancient Egyptians used the ankh symbol when referring to copper in their hieroglyphs. Since the ankh also represents eternal life, it shows the great respect that they had for the metal.
